The chalky moon in the blue

waits for the stone,

waits for Menna Kyffin’s kite

to jump over it

red

over the beehives and slacks,

the paisley ties and corduroys,

the shared borders of lawns…

in the blue, as the stone

takes its time and thinks

it is no more grey than

red

up the steepish bit between

Mary Coffee’s flaking wall

and the Clay’s – grey stone

on its arc to the moon.

There’s hardly time for the stone

to look up and turn

the go-kart racing towards us

into Mary Coffee’s trolley.

Its brakes don’t work.

Its scones wear goggles,

hold the tatted doilies down.

Its casters laugh, hysterically

as they round the barking bend.

They will not stop –

Heather,Wendy, Mary, Mair…

until they reach the sea.
